Field Of Gold delivered a commanding victory in the Group One Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas (1,600m) on Saturday, handing trainers John and Thady Gosden a measure of redemption after a narrow defeat in the English equivalent three weeks earlier.
Switched from Kieran Shoemark to local jockey Colin Keane, the Kingman colt made no mistake this time, storming home down the outside to defeat stablemate Cosmic Year by nearly four lengths. The performance echoed the achievements of his sire, Kingman, who also won Ireland’s first Classic of the season.
Redemption was also the theme in Sunday’s Group One Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas (1,600m), where Aidan O’Brien’s Lake Victoria bounced back from a below-par showing at Newmarket. Guided by Ryan Moore, the filly overcame a traffic-filled run before bursting through at the 400m mark and pulling away from California Dreamer in the final stages. It marked one of four wins on the day for Moore, who also claimed the Group One Tattersalls Gold Cup (2,000m) aboard Los Angeles.
Meanwhile in Australia, Antino confirmed his status as a rising star with a dominant win in the Group One Doomben Cup (2,000m). In a race that saw front-runner Pride Of Jenni fade sharply, Antino surged from the back of the field with an explosive turn of foot to secure his second Group One title.
Hong Kong jockey Matthew Poon Ming-fai impressed with a sixth-place finish aboard longshot Klondike, after executing a ground-saving ride.
“Really happy how he ran. He tried hard and ran well,” Poon said. “Next start a bit further, he’ll run much better.”
