The Netherlands Set Sights on Gold at Women’s Euros: ‘Need to Go for It’

The Netherlands are gearing up to defend their title at the 2025 Women’s European Championship in Switzerland, with manager Andries Jonker emphasizing the team’s determination to aim for gold once again.

The Oranje Lionesses, who triumphed at the Euros in 2017, recently reconvened after a short break to begin preparations for the tournament. Jonker expressed optimism about the squad’s renewed energy and focus following a team retreat to Lourdes.

“The energy is palpable during training,” Jonker told NOS. “The level is good again. We went to Lourdes. We recharged our batteries. We recharged our power. We recharged our enthusiasm. They’re back on track.”

This will be Jonker’s final tournament in charge, as the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed that his contract will not be renewed. Despite this, the experienced coach is fully committed to giving his team the best chance at success in his last major competition.

“You know that this is your last time preparing for a tournament. I am aware of that. But apart from that, it doesn’t affect me. We are doing everything we can to perform as well as possible,” Jonker told ANP.

Jonker highlighted the significance of the “golden generation” that won in 2017, noting that the players understand what it takes to succeed at the highest level. “We need to go for our chances again.”

A key figure for the team, star striker Vivianne Miedema, is making a promising recovery from a hamstring injury sustained in March. She recently participated fully in training and is expected to be ready for the tournament, though Jonker acknowledged she is not yet at full fitness.

“Today she participated in the entire training session. She can participate fully in the game, she is not being spared. She is on track. It’s not quite where it needs to be yet, but we still have time.”

Lineth Beerensteyn remains a minor concern after missing the first training session ahead of the Euros.

The Women’s European Championship runs from July 2 to 27 in Switzerland. The Netherlands have been drawn into Group D alongside Wales, France, and England — a challenging group that promises fierce competition as the reigning champions look to reclaim their throne.
